Scope is counted in modules, not features
Custom software is best estimated by coherent functional areas — invoicing, scheduling, inventory — because each carries its own data model, permissions, interfaces and edge cases. Counting individual features tends to understate integration and testing effort.
MVP versus complete first release
An MVP is not a discounted version of the full product; it is a deliberately narrower one. Framing the first release as an MVP typically reduces cost by around a third, but only if scope is genuinely cut rather than deferred into the same delivery window.
Assurance is engineering work
Security posture, audit trails, access control and compliance evidence are frequently underestimated because they produce no visible feature. In regulated contexts they can add 40% or more to a build, and they are not optional.
Total cost of ownership
A reasonable planning assumption is that annual running and evolution costs land somewhere between 15% and 25% of the original build cost. Software that is not maintained becomes a liability faster than most organisations expect.
